Follow Globtour Montenegro, leading tour operator in Montenegro, to the final resting place of great bishop and poet Petar II Petrović Njegoš, his Mausoleum on the Lovćen Mountain.

Let us tell you something about the famous Montenegrin dynasty Petrović Njegoš. And let us introduce you the great bishop and poet, Petar II Petrović Njegoš.  Follow us to his final resting place, his mausoleum on the Lovćen Mountain.
Only 30 km away from the coastline the relief of Montenegro turns into the raw and almost unapproachable karst area of Lovćen Mountain. This area is the border between the coast and mainland of Montenegro, influenced by two climates- Mediterranean and continental.  The town of Cetinje, nestled in the karst area, surrounded by the cliffs of Lovcen and its frozen limestone peaks, was the battle field and shelter of the Montenegrin people at the same time, seat of the most important Montenegrin Dynasty, Petrović Njegoš, which the Montenegrins are very proud of. Petar II Petrović Njegoš, 5th member of the Dynasty, surely deserves special place in the history and culture of Montenegro. But he has also chosen the special place to take his final rest, still observing the whole country and its folk.

Itinerary

Visit: Cetinje

We depart from your hotel and proceed up into the mountains. Soon we make a short stop to admire the beauty of the Rivera of Budva and take some panorama photos of its beaches and settlements.  In about 45 minutes we approach Cetinje, the Old Royal Capital of Montenegro. More than 200 years long the members of the Petrović Dynasty were struggling against Turks for the independence of their homeland. They finally gained it at the end of the 19th century. As a gift from God for the long suffering and struggle for religion, culture and freedom, the recognition of Montenegrin independence came at the Berlin Congress of 1878. Since then Cetinje developed rapidly. This small town still keeps the evidences of spiritual and secular authority of the Dynasty Petrović.
We will take a walk to the centre of the town. Each house on the main square reveals some part of the history of Montenegro.

Visit: Biljarda

This time we have chosen to visit so-called Biljarda, former residence of Petar II Petrović Njegoš– prince and bishop, great poet and philosopher. It takes its name from the billiard table, which the bishop bought in Vienna. In this house Peter II was putting his thoughts down on the paper and created his greatest poem “The Mountain Wreath”. One can feel time, circumstances and conditions under which Petar II created outstanding literature works of the 19th century.
In a large glass pavilion attached to the side of the Biljarda, the huge relief map of Montenegro was constructed in 1917. The map illustrates just how mountainous Montenegro really is. As you walk around, you will realize why no foreign power ever managed to garrison the country effectively.
After the visit of Biljarda free time is forseen. You can take a walk through the pedestrian zone. We suggest you to visit the Monastery of Cetinje and a small church in its vicinity. They both keep the graves of some members of the Petrović Dynasty. Or you can simply relax and have a cup of coffee.

Visit: Njegoš’s Mausoleum

Some 20 km from Cetnje up into the Lovcen Mount the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš stands proudly on the second highest mountain peak. Respecting the wish of their ruler Montenegrins built a chapel while he was still alive. Later on the chapel was replaced by the Ivan Meštrović’s great masterpiece- the Mausoleum.
We drive a narrow, curvy road to the Jezerski vrh (Lake peak) and then we climb 461 steps to the very top (1.600 m above the sea level). Take a deep breath of the fresh air and keep your eyes wide open. As you slowly turn all around, you will be amazed by the view of the Kotor Bay, Skadar Lake, high mountains in the northern part of Montenegro, even Albania. In the Mausoleum you will find the figures of two Montenegrin women made of black granite, as well as the figure and marble sarcophagus of Petar II Petrovic Njegos.
By visiting of the Mausoleum we complete the story about Montenegrin great ruler and poet. We comprise fascinating natural peculiarities, as well as culture and history of Montenegro. Finally, it will be possible to create a proper image about one people in mountainous Balkans.
