Book an Excursion / Excursion The South of Montenegro
If you’d like to get to know the southernmost part of Montenegrin coast, this excursion is a perfect choice. The towns of Bar and Ulcinj were under the Turkish occupation for a long time, until the Montenegrin King Nikola the I liberated it in 1878. Different cultures, religions, customs and traditions mingled in this area. The Orient meets the Christian West.
We drive along the coast direction south-east. Our first destination will be the town of Bar, main port of Montenegro, including visit of the Old Bar, the town of ghosts, as well as one of the oldest olive trees in the world. Further between the coast and Rumija Mountain to the town of Ulcinj and its divine beaches. And finally we can relax and refresh on the Long Beach of Ulcinj.
Itinerary
Visit: The Old town Bar
We depart from your hotel, passing by Sveti Stefan, unique settlement nestled on a small peninsula. After you have taken photos of the sleepy Sveti Stefan, we proceed direction south-east. After few kilometers the small town of Petrovac and its beaches will appear on the right-hand side. In about 45 minutes we come across the small hill to the town of Bar.
The Old town Bar, which once had about 3.500 inhabitants, is a town of ghosts now. You will have a possibility to visit this archeologically rich town whose restoration began few years ago. Just a little bit of imagination will be needed to liven up this town. Explore the remains of the Venetian palaces, Turkish bath and clock-tower, as well as aqueduct, orthodox and catholic churches. Climb up to the Citadel, which offers you a great view of the valley with olive trees and Rumija Mountain behind the town. Further down from the citadel to the green plateau with the best view of the New Bar and harbor. Before leaving the Old Town Bar, we will pass by an old Turkish clock-tower. Time stands still, but the experts aim to awake the Old Bar from its deep sleep.
Visit: Stara maslina
One of peculiarities of our coast are also olive trees. In the good old days sailors from this region were not allowed to marry before they planted certain number of olive trees. Thanks to this custom there are more than 500 000 olive trees along Montenegrin seaside.
Few minutes away from the Old Bar by bus, there is a place where one of three oldest olive trees in the world grows more than 2.000 years. This olive tree still gives the fruits.
Visit: The Old town Ulcinj
The excursion continues to Ulcinj, the southernmost town on the Montenegrin coast. The Old town Ulcinj is located on a rocky plateau that partly hangs over the sea. Encircled by the “Cyclopean walls”, it is reachable both from the north-east and from the bay. During the guided tour through the narrow streets you will feel the influences of the Orient. Still today homes of the residents, mostly Muslims, are hidden from the looks of the passersby behind their high walls. The Square of Slaves still attracts the attention of the guests, once a place where the pirates brought and sold their slaves. There is also a towns museum situated in the church-mosque, an orthodox church which was converted into the mosque during the Turkish occupation.
After the visit of the Old town Ulcinj indulge yourself a cup of coffee on the so-called Mala plaza.
