Globtour Montenegro, the leading travel agency in Montenegro, invites you on an unforgettable train journey through the breathtaking nature of Montenegro.

Experience the famous Belgrade–Bar railway, one of the most spectacular mountain railways in Europe. During the outbound journey, enjoy breathtaking views of the Morača Canyon from the train – a natural wonder of Montenegro – seen from a bird’s-eye perspective. On the return trip, you will witness this fascinating canyon again, this time from the bus – including a photo stop at its narrowest and deepest point.

The railway is 476 km long, with 175 km passing through Montenegro, the “Land of the Black Mountains.” This route was also favored by former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito, who welcomed world leaders such as Arafat, Brezhnev, Nehru, Nasser, Mitterrand, and Brandt aboard his legendary Blue Train.

Itinerary

From Budva to Bar by bus

We travel by bus from Budva along Montenegro’s most beautiful coastal stretch, passing very famous holiday resorts: Bečići, Miločer, Sveti Stefan, Petrovac, and Sutomore. Along this coastline, beautiful pebble and sandy beaches line up like pearls on a necklace.

From Bar to Kolasin by train

In Bar, we board a modernized, fully air-conditioned train and begin our journey through Montenegro’s mountainous interior towards the Skadar Lake National Park, the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula. Right at the start, we pass through the 6.2 km long Sozina Tunnel, the longest in the country. We travel past the picturesque fishing village of Virpazar and cross a bridge built in 1952, still used for both rail and road traffic. Around the lake, we discover traces of Montenegro’s turbulent history – churches, monasteries, fortresses, and villages nestled in lush vegetation.

The route continues through the fertile Zeta Plain to the capital, Podgorica. From there, the train follows the Morača River, passing vineyards and through the spectacular Morača Gorge. We steadily gain altitude – from 12 meters in Bar up to 1,032 meters in Kolašin. A highlight of the journey is crossing the highest railway bridge in Europe – the 201-meter-high Mala Rijeka Bridge, whose gentle curve offers breathtaking views into the depths below.

Lunch in Kolasin

Upon arrival in Kolašin, we disembark from the train and continue by bus to the Biogradska Gora National Park. Near the glacier lake Biogradsko Lake, we first enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Afterwards, there is time for a walk (approx. 3.2 km) around the lake to experience the impressive nature of the national park.

Return from Kolasin to Budva by bus

Afterwards, we travel by bus to the famous Morača Monastery, built in 1252. After visiting the monastery, the journey heads toward the coast, with a photo stop at the deepest point of the Morača Gorge. Passing Podgorica and Skadar Lake, where we take a short coffee break by the lakeshore, the trip continues through the Sozina motorway tunnel back to the coast, arriving in Budva around 6:30 PM.
