Book an Excursion / Excursion Mostar
Once it was just a small settlement with two towers overlooking a wooden bridge. Today Mostar is part of UNESCO’s Worl Cultural Heritage and the best of examples of the centuries-old fusion of Western and Eastern cultures.
The town derives its name from the local word for ‘bridge’ (most), or more precisely “the guardians of the bridge” (mostari). An architect at Sultan Suleiman’s court could not even imagine, that his work would become the most prominent monument when he built it in 1566. It witness the great ordeals in this area over the centuries.
The journey takes us along the Montenegrin coast across the border and further on to Trebinje, where we make a short stop. We proceed towards Mostar via Stolac and Ljubinje. Upon arrival, we visit the old town accompanied by a local guide.
All buildings in the Old town have retained their authentic appearance. The spirit of the Orient is felt with every step along the way.
Koski Mehmed Pasha’s Mosque, built in 1617, is the only local mosque that has retained its original wall colours and ornamentation. A visit to a Turkish home will introduce you to the customs and lifestyle of Muslims in Mostar. Buildings from the Austro-Hungarian era complete the architectural richness of the town. This cultural diversity is what gives this town its special appeal. Despite the many challenges of its turbulent past, the town aspires to maintain the coexistence of all the people that live here. With its Muslim, Catholic, Orthodox and Jewish shrines, Mostar is nowadays the only truly multiethnic town in this area.
After the tour, we make a lunch stop at one of the local national restaurants, after which there will be free time available for individual exploration of the town.
