Excursion Montenegro to Albania
Albania, one of the last undiscovered secrets, a land with great natural and spiritual wealth, which spent more than 50 years of the 20th century completely isolated from the rest of the world.
At around one and a half hours drive away from Budva, Albania offers an unforgettable experience, extraordinary natural beauty combined with rich history and culture. The excursion includes a tour of Albanian villages along three rivers - Buna, Drini and Kiri, surrounded by the Rozafa Fortress. A visit to the second largest city of Shkodër, an ancient commercial centre with medieval fortresses, and one of the most important cities in Albania. A visit to the Archeological Museum, which displays artefacts from the Bronze Age, Hellenic or Roman periods etc.
Departure to Albania
We start in the morning, drive along the southeastern part of the Montenegrian coast.
After we cross the border with Albania, the local guide will join us and reveal the secret of Albania, Shqipëria- the land of eagles. Along the narrow, curvy road through the villages, which was built during the Enver Hoxha’s time, the Communist leader of Albania, you will have a chance to see concrete bunkers that stick out of the earth like mushrooms, the proofs of Hoxa’s tough regime.
Visit: Rozafa Castle
Driving further through the picturesque countryside, through the valley of three rivers- Buna, Drini and Kiri, we approach the castle Rozafa. It rises imposingly on a rocky hill, 130 metres above sea level, surrounded by the Buna and Drini rivers. The legend about the castle’s erection will not leave you indifferent. The wall of the castle offers a beautiful view of the Skadar Lake and the city of Shkodër, our next destination.
Visit: Shkodër- second largest town in Albania
The city of Shkodër, established by the Illyrians, is one of the more important cities in Albania. Due to its good geographic position Shkodra was developed under the influences of different cultures, civilizations and religions, which encountered each other, fought against each other but at the end intermingled and formed the multicultural society. On the way to the city center by coach, various buildings will show you two face of city- communist and modern one.
You will also have sufficient free time to walk along one of the oldest streets, visit the Al-Zamil Mosque, to buy some souvenirs…
Lunch in the national restaurant in Albania
At ca. 1 o’clock pm we go to the restaurant by coach. We will have lunch in the national restaurant “Legjenda”, decorated with paintings which describe the legend of Rozafa.
Departure to Montenegro
After lunch we turn back the same way to Montenegro and gather the impressions of our visit to Albania.
