Itinerary
Visit: Kotor – UNESCO World’s Heritage Site
We drive half an hour through the Grbalj valley to the medieval town Kotor. Its location in the most beautiful bay in the Mediterranean Sea and the impressive medieval Old town were reason why UNESCO included this town into the list of the World`s Heritage Sites. Well preserved 4,5 km long wall was protecting this town of the pirates, nowadays it is a challenge to the visitors who desire to reach its highest point- San Giovanni fortress. Once you enter the Old town through the Sea Gate, the old Clock Tower will welcome you and tell you that you are right on time to explore the charming streets and squares of this wealthy town. Passing by the palaces of the noble families, you will feel the spirit of Venetian culture and architecture. Suddenly the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, patron and protector of Kotor, will appear in front of you and amaze you with its simple beauty. Only few steps further there is the Maritime museum, home of the long naval history and tradition of Kotor and the whole Boka bay.
After guided tour through the Old town Kotor, you will have plenty of time to wonder around, enjoy the cup of coffee on the main square or even visit Green market near the Sea gate.
The excursion continues along the curvy road on the steep slopes of Mount Lovcen up to a belvedere at 900 m above sea level. The higher we drive, the more spectacular views to the Boka bay you will enjoy, one of 25 most beautiful in the world.
The famous British writer and poet, Lord Gordon Byron said: “The most beautiful contact between the earth and sea took place at the Montenegrin littoral”.
Snack in Njegusi village
The curvy road continues to the Njegusi village, so-called smaragdine valley hidden deep in the stony terrain of Lovcen, the cradle of bishops and rulers from the Petrovic Dynasty. We make a half-hour stop at the restaurant to taste the famous Njegusi cheese, smoked ham, mead and wine.
A journey through “the sea of stone” leads to Cetinje the Old Royal capital of Montenegro, a place that has best preserved the spirit and tradition of the Montenegrin people.
Visit: Cetinje – Old Royal capital of Montenegro
It may seem to you that Cetinje fell into the deep sleep, but it just rests after its long turbulent past, which began in the 15th century. In order to protect its folk of the Otoman invasion and preserve the orthodox religion and culture, the great emperor Ivan Crnojevic left the fertile area of Skadar lake and found the shelter in the raw area of Lovcen Mount. Having built his palace and the Monastery, he founded the new seat of the old Montenegro and the seat of the Montenegrin Metropolitanate, the town of Cetinje.
In the center of the town where we first stop, you will see the bequest of the most important Montenegrins, Petrovic Dynasty, wich ruled the country over 200 years: Biljarda - residence of the bishop, writer and philosopher Petar II Petrovic Njegos, King Nikola’s Palace, Monastery of Cetinje… Petrovics were constantly struggling against Turks for the independence of their homeland and finaly gained it at the end of the 19th century and attracted various European countries to open their embassies in this small town. By visiting the King Nikola’s palace our tour guide will introduce you the life of the Royal Family Petrovic.
You will also have free time to feel peaceful atmosphere of Cetinje, to explore the former embassies or refresh in a café.
On the way back to your hotel, a photo stop at a place with a view of the Budva’s Riviera with its peninsula of Sveti Stefan, a true pearl of the Adriatic coast.
